Manoa Falls, O’ahu, Hawaii

January 21, 2012

This hike has been on my Hawaii bucket list for a long time.  I was finally able to do it last week!  It is located quite close to Honolulu so if you have a rental car while there, it is only a short drive to the parking lot.  Several things to note–in the winter months (November – March) the trail is likely to be quite muddy.  There are high pressure hoses and a scrub brush at the trailhead and you will need them when coming out.  The trail ascends about 400 feet, some of that due to climbing high steps and over rocks, boulders and tree roots.

There is an “outhouse” at the trailhead, but after stepping inside I would rather have used the bushes.  There is no fee as the trail and falls are on public land.  However, there is a $5 fee to park at the trailhead.

The hike may take about an hour each way (1.6 miles roundtrip) so plan on doing it well before dark, considering you are walking through forest that will have the natural light of the sky obscured.

Having said all that, the landscape was incredible!  I would do it again but not unless I had “trained” by doing squats for some time before going!  I had trouble walking for several days after completing the walk.  It’s all those high steps.  Perhaps I just need to get more exercise on a regular basis!

Aston Waikiki Circle renovated and nice

January 19, 2012

Yesterday I visited the Aston Waikiki Circle for the first time. It has been around for a long time with many employees being there for decades. It is now managed by Aston and has recently undergone a nice renovation.
All rooms are alike, but prices will vary depending upon the date of stay and location of the room. I saw a very nice one on the 14th floor. The new decor is light and airy. The location couldn’t be better, just across the street from the Hula Mound and the Waikiki Beach. Just outside the lobby is a “sharing box” where guests may find a boogie board or beach mat that can be used and returned for no charge. There is also a rack for storing surfboards if you are staying there and renting a board or have brought your own.

The building itself is unique in that it is actually round like a circle. Sure makes it easier to locate among all those rectangle buildings in Waikiki!

Next to the lobby is a newly opened Eggs N Things location where you can get breakfast to either eat in or take out. Good food…I ate there this morning.

Give it a try! I think I will next time I’m in Waikiki!

Aulani Disney Hotel & Spa on O’ahu

January 17, 2012

Beautiful property! Nice rooms. Friendly staff—Disney knows how to train their people in service! They all say Aloha when they see you in the halls, at the pool, wherever. As with everything Disney, they are one of the best in the world at attention to detail. Expensive? Yes! Worth it? That is a matter of opinion and depends upon what you want and how much money you are willing and able to spend. Like going to Disneyland, once you are in the door, much of what is offered is included in the price. It is a good idea to find the daily newsletter the Iwa (a bird that gave early Hawaiians guidance) soon after arriving to find out what is going on and where.

There are times each day when Disney Characters are available for photos. Their “special local character” is the Menehune, a small magical type person from ancient Hawaii who is mischevious. You never actually see the Menehune, but there are statues hidden here and there and indications that they are present.

Obviously it is a place geared toward children, and they do it very well. There are activities for children and some for adults and many for families. Children over the age of 3 can do activities at Aunty’s Beach House on their own and those younger can attend with an family adult. Many of the activities are included in the price of the room, but some are not so check on that before assuming one way or the other.

There is storytelling by Uncle (you may see a couple of different Uncles depending upon what day of the week it is—everybody has to have a day off sometime!). He exudes aloha and good fun and has a huge store of knowledge about Hawaii–past and present. Hula lessons for children and science lessons about volcanoes.

For adults or children–how about an introduction to ukulele playing? Maybe take a walk with a cast member and learn about the nature and wildlife at Aulani? Use a hand held device to search for menehune. It’s fun but not as easy as it sounds. I had to return my first one to get another. Still, it was fun and very “Disney” with pictures coming to life and stars appearing like magic on the floor or in rocks. I did a couple of these—there are several—but did not finish—too much to do, too little time! Want to look like a Hawaiian? Try the temporary tattoos!
Though any food or drink you purchase seems to be about 25% more than necessary and parking is $35/day (we are not anywhere near a big city so why is that?), they do provide ice water at various points around the property. There are options to save money on a vacation here. Across the street are places to eat like Hawaiian BBQ, a Country Market (associated with the ABC Stores) that sells hot food and deli items, Two Scoops Ice Cream shop and other places available with more being built. The Marriott next door has a decent Happy Hour and you can get coffee at 5:30 am there. The Aulani does not have an early morning option for coffee, though there is the normal hotel room coffee if you are desperate. They do need to come up with the early morning option for those who have not yet adjusted to this time zone.

One of the best deals going is to buy the special cup at the Kalepa’s Store near the lobby upon arrival. With it you get refillable coffee and fountain drinks for your entire stay. Even for three days it would have been a good idea as the cup including tax is about $20 and coffee is about $3.50/cup. Wish I had known about this when I got there and not two days into my three day stay.
Menehune Bridge is a great water feature place for small children to play, with water sprays, showers, splashing pools and such. Lounge chairs are close for adults to supervise, but the kids do love it!
Then there are the water slides! Grab an inner tube for one or two people, climb the steps up the mountain volcano and slide down, dumping into a lazy river. Along the river are various carvings in the “rocks” that are fun to find—animals and such. You are never out of sight of a life guard. They particularly watch the splash downs of the tubers. They are also right there when you do the other slide which is just you and the water, spiraling down through the dark mountain and splashing into a pool at the bottom. This can be a bit disorienting. The lifeguards do not hesitate to jump in and help you right yourself at the bottom (water is only 4 feet there, but still enough to cause momentary panic). I wasn’t panicked, you understand, but they did grab me on my first run and explained the best way to do it. My other slides were much more fun! Maybe again today! There were a lot of small (like 4-5 years old!) children doing this! Some without life vests, but vests were available for any who wanted them. The slide is individual and those kids couldn’t wait to get into that dark tube!
The walking paths are well lit for walking early in the morning or late evening. The fitness room is well equipped and easy to access. I did not use it as I’m more of an “outside” walker. There is easy access to the sidewalk that runs along the shore and is maintained by Ko’olina. It makes for nice strolling or jogging. I wished for a map would have given me distance indicators so I’d know when I had completed my two miles. Perhaps there might even be distance calculated for how many times to walk around the lazy river area to equate to a mile. Early morning walkers still on a different time zone will feel just a bit more secure walking on the property itself.
You can snorkel in the lagoon using their equipment (extra charge) or bring your own as we did. The water was rather cloudy on the day we went into the water so we didn’t see many fish, but another time might be pretty good and they say there is a turtle who likes to hang out in the lagoon sometimes. You can also snorkel in their artificial reef (pond) for a fee of $20 for one day or $40 for your entire stay. This would be really good for rookie snorkelers as there are tons of fish and instruction to go with the equipment. Glass windows on this pool make it so even if you aren’t snorkeling, you can see the fish (no cost!).
Some real pluses about the design of the rooms–lots of outlets! No more hunting behind furniture or unplugging the only reading lamp in order to recharge your phone. Also, internet access from the room is amazing! Easy and quick and there is a strong signal. Nice! The rooms have a coffee maker with refills of coffee each day. The “refrigerator” is more of a cold box but did nicely for sandwich makings. I loved the “hot pot” for making hot water that can be used for tea (replenished daily if the tea is used) or soup or instant oatmeal we had brought.
Open only since August of 2011, the Aulani is a work in progress. The designers were obviously very conscious of the Hawaiian heritage of the area while still catering to the need for advanced technology. Go visit if you can–even if only for two or three days. If the price (depending upon time of year and what promotion might be going on) is a bit steep, move to another property on O’ahu or on a neighboring island for the remainder of your vacation.

Outrigger Waikiki on the Beach

January 17, 2012

This is a lovely classic hotel on the beach at Waikiki. I had breakfast at the buffet at Duke’s and it was great! Lovely view of Diamond Head, as well as the vow renewal that happens there (free for guests). I’ve done the vow renewal at Outrigger before. It’s very well done and not at all cheesy as I had feared, but as meaningful as you would want.
One of my main purposes in visiting this time was to take a look at the ADA rooms. They have the roll in shower types in the City View category and those with a low tub edge and lots of grab bars in the Partial Ocean View.
Be aware that they will be working on renovations from March until the end of June. I did get to see a model room. I’m very pleased with the updating changes they will be making. Outrigger is a class act and renovations continue to echo that.

Radisson Hotel PDX Lindbergh Level

January 11, 2012

I always enjoy staying at the Radisson Hotel at the Portland, Oregon Airport. The staff is friendly, the service is great and the Lakeside Cafe has food at a reasonable price with a friendly waitstaff and a chef who comes by to ask how you liked his cooking.
This time we upgraded to the Lindbergh Level–4th floor, inlcudes a nice lounge with cookies in the afternoon and coffee any time. There is a computer in the lounge where you can check your email or whatever.

It also includes a continental breakfast, and parking for 10 days (you get the parking for the standard room as well). If you upgrade to the Lindbergh Level, it is an extra $25 for two people. This includes 2 drinks each and an appetizer for each of the two people at the Lakeside Cafe. We added Pulled Pork Sliders and called it dinner. Oh yes, we get continental breakfast in the morning! Nice!

We aslo get a ride to the airport in the morning so we dobn’t have to worry about traffic or road conditions!

I’ve included pictures of the lounge as it is one of the things that defines the Lindbergh Level here at the Radisson.

Big Creek Fishing Lodge, Astoria, Oregon

December 21, 2011

[gallery]<a href=”http://www.bigcreekfishing.com” title=”Big Creek Fishing Lodge”>

There are lots of reasons to come to this lovely place.  We came to fish.  Of course, we heard they were “knocking them dead” the week before we got there!  We caught no fish, but found a lovely lodge that can be rented for a variety of events, including corporate events, weddings, family reunions, and of course, fishing!  The scenery is incredible along this stretch of Big Creek, near Astoria!  The Lodge has three bedrooms, kitchen, large living room and a “game room” that hunters will enjoy with some very well done taxidermy.

Shore Acres State Park, OR–Christmas Lights!

December 15, 2011

I have been to this lovely park near North Bend on the southern Oregon coast before. Just not at this time of year! From Thanksgiving to New Years Eve, they put on a huge light show! The work is all volunteer, and this year they had 300,000 lights!!! Most are LED and many depict movement of things like whales or frogs jumping. Go at dusk and wander the trails. I loved the lights nestled among the hydrandeas! It was like art imitating nature! Amazing! This is something for the whole family. Fortunately, this year the weather has been wonderfully crisp and clear making for a great experience! Go if you can! It is so much fun!

Port Orford, Oregon

December 4, 2011

Small town, 1,100 population, but the views of the ocean, trails around the headlands and general beauty are amazing! Hard to miss it if you are driving south on Hwy 101 in Oregon toward the southern border. Well worth a visit!

Crazy Norwegian’s in Port Orford, Oregon

December 4, 2011

Today we stopped for lunch at Crazy Norwegian’s in Port Orford. It’s a small place, but has a friendly staff (Kelsey was a great waitress!), fun decor and great fish and chips! I even bought the coffee cup (like I needed another coffee cup!). If you are in the area–southern Oregon Coast–try it! Highway 101 259 6th Street, Port Orford, OR 97465

Paradise Point Resort, San Diego, California

October 31, 2011

Nearly “across the street” from Sea World, this resort is located perfectly for families wanting to experience the attractions available in the San Diego area. With pools that are family friendly and options like water sports, a family can easily spend time here after a long day at the zoo. Maybe go to Sea World one day and the next just spend the day relaxing at Paradise Point! You’ll be glad you did! The property has been here for quite awhile and is in the process of upgrading and refurbishing its bungalow style accommodations. I stayed in a duplex that was comfortably large enough to spread out and located on a lagoon that was lovely and serene. With a small pool just outside our door, we had the option to go to the larger pool a ways away or just relax “close to home”.

Want a little exercise and a good view of the surrounding area? Climb the Observation Tower! Fantastic view and a good bit of exercise by climbing the 81 steps! There was an overachiever person in front of me who ran up the steps, but I like to take in the view so I took it a bit slower, stopping to gaze about several times. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it!

I believe they are working on better lighting for evening strolls as it was a little difficult to find the connecting pathways after dark.

The conference center is modern and spacious, and the food served there was wonderful! The wait staff was friendly and knowledgeable with an attitude of service that was refreshing. We arrived earlier than the normal checkin time, went to have lunch at the outdoor cafe and soon received a call that we could check in early. Nice!
